Although this was the first time for my rereading of this book, all the shock, joys and thrills of the first read swiftly returned to enliven me as if I was reading for the first time. I can't quite express in words how muc ...more "

" ‘The wheel weaves as the wheel wills’. The wheel of time turns and turns, and I finally finished it. C’mon! Although, the word ‘finally’ is a poor representation of my journey of consumption through start to finish - given it took me 11 days to rapid ‘The wheel weaves as the wheel wills’. The wheel of time turns and turns, and I finally finished it. C’mon! Although, the word ‘finally’ is a poor representation of my journey of consumption through start to finish - given it took me 11 days to rapidly grind through this. It has been the first audiobook I have listened to in quite a while, with the last being ‘The Hunger Games’ Trilogy as a reread/re-listen during the initial beckoning of the COVID pandemic in 2020. I did infact initiate a free trial on audible which will likely be continued given my thirst for more of Robert Jordan’s world won’t be quenched anytime soon. Excitedly, as I am writing this review on a Tuesday, the Amazon prime season 3 of Wheel of time is being released this Thursday, the first 3 episodes dropping at once. In anticipation of this, I physically couldn’t wait and had to immerse myself deeper in this world, hence why I started this book in the first place. I can tell you in confidence that a mini tub of haagen-dazs chocolate ice cream will be waiting for me on Thursday night, to enhance the pure pleasure and excitement of a new season - this moment is what I’ve been living for…

Nonetheless, when pondering upon what I should rate this book - the matter of factness regarding 5 stars was inevitable. Simply the feeling of being in this world was enough for me, Robert Jordan’s worldly and dazzling descriptions team with Rosamund Pike’s wilful acting as the narrator of this audio book (another reason that drew me in since I love her betrayal of Morraine so much!). The world building starts from the get go, and it feels like such a place of home to be amongst the characters on their journey. Largely told from Rand’s perspective with a few others dotted in and around, I felt entrenched as a Two rivers folk. With the large amount of travelling the group undergoes, their journey of navigating the different places of their world becomes so fun to read/listen about. I might have found many aspects of the lore confusing if I hadn’t first been exposed to the show, it all felt like a reinforcement of what I had been taught in the show and the enhancement of more details that the show didn’t have time to capture.

5 stars also wouldn’t be 5 starts without good, fleshed out, imperfect characters. This remains true for main crew - Rand, Perrin, Mat, Egwene, Nynaeve, Morraine & Lan. I love them all so much, maybe a Mat a bit less since most of the time he is outright annoying and makes stupid choices akin to a 10 year old, but oh well… Perrin’s character is also more fleshed out here and I can begin to understand his personality and motivations more. Yet the women really take it home for me - especially Morraine as such a wisdom-filled, badass guide like figure.

There were many points of tension, battles, fight scenes and if I hadn’t seen the show, I might have been overwhelmed by the sheer amount of characters and places - although this seems to be the reality of a big fantasy series. Drawing on criticisms, it would have been great to read/listen to more chapters told from characters who aren’t Rand - while we did get a couple, more would have been nice. This is where the show does really well at fleshing out everyone’s characters to make sure everyone is seen and understood to their full potential. There were also quite a lot of repeating dream sequences that didn’t seem to add much value as the more and more they appeared, they really didn’t add much more value than the last - it got a bit repetitive.

All in all, I loved being entrenched in the wheel of time world, engrossed in the interplay of strong, powerful characters. It was a treat to have listened to this in somewhat of a quick fashion in anticipation for the release of season 3 of ‘The Wheel of Time’. Lewis, out… ...more "
