Changeling is the third book in the Six Stories series, and you follow the disappearance of Alfie Marsden. The seven-year-old boy goes missing on Christmas Eve, 1988. He's last seen in his father's car that breaks down near Wentshire Forest Pass, an allegedly haunted forest.

Right from the start, Changeling feels different from the other books in the series. The cornerstone is the same, there's an unsolved case explored through six different perspectives. But Scott King, the narrator, is way more apprehensive about dealing with this case. He picks it up after receiving a letter that promises new information, and you can feel his hesitation and dread. He's usually very meticulous with his interviews, but here he makes mistakes and sounds distraught at times, which is unusual for him.

This is a mystery with different possible explanations, from supernatural creatures, an evil witch, crazy ex-girlfriends, and family suspicion. I'm amazed at how the author intertwines supernatural aspects into the mystery/thriller genre without feeling forced or cheap.

The writing is addicting, and you'll feel enveloped in the little details of these characters' lives. Also, you can't trust 100% in the characters' portrayal. Someone may seem a good guy to one of the characters, and the next one has a completely different opinion. Who to believe? It's mostly up to you to decide.

Unlike the other books in the series, Six Stories and Hydra, I had a suspicion of where the story was going. I won't give anything away, but still, when the revelations unfold, you'll be blown away. There's also a clear conclusion to the mystery of Alfie Marsden's disappearance, so you won't be left hanging.

It's hard not to repeat myself in these reviews of the Six Stories series since the general theme is always the same. These are companion novels that follow a podcast format and rely on a mystery with a dash of the supernatural. There are some unreliable narrators, and the characters are what moves the story forward. But Changeling is different because it gets more personal and gives a level of depth to some characters that you don't get in the previous books. If the series ended now, it would end well.

As seen previously, I'm a big fan of the Six Stories series. It features everything I love about mystery books, and Changeling was no exception. Following flawed characters and unraveling a mystery of years is something that will hook you from the start. You won't be able to stop until the jaw-dropping ending. ...more "
