The plot so far: a random bar owner is forced to volunteer as a candidate in an election. We're supposed to care because the bar she owns is kind of a front for rescuing kids from the streets. The election process involves locking the candidates up in a remote location for a couple weeks without any provisions. The entire time, it's hinted that the FMC is dealing with a haunted past wherein she did something terrible to her family she can't even think about, and she was also tortured (possibly locked in a box/closet for a long time) so now she is supposedly a really tough badass, but also has a panic attack if it's dark.

The FMC has some banter with one of the other candidates (the current governor person) and maybe a frenemies thing going on with her "guard" who is actually an enforcer to make sure she continues the charade as a candidate. This guard guy is called The Whispering Death or something equally ambiguous and nefarious. We're supposed to believe he is also a tough badass, but he refuses to meet the FMC's gaze... I guess because he thinks it will immediately let her control his mind, even though she regularly speaks to others without ensnaring their minds. His magic allows him to control people's bodies, so why exactly didn't they just send him to be a candidate?

And there are fae, in a tenuous truce with the humans after a terrible war, so the humans don't like them or the half-blooded fae, but they let them into their city and just forbid them from using magic on people. With no real way to enforce this rule, people on the street feel comfortable calling half-bloods derogatory names while visiting bars owned by them. So why exactly fae even need to exist in this story is unclear, but I suspect it's just because fae are in vogue right now. And who knows, maybe we just need a subplot of fae so that we can drop in a fated mate bond at some point. It wouldn't surprise me. Probably with the Creeping Death guy she doesn't get along with at all but would probably fall in insta-love with once that mate bond snaps into place like they always do.

Honestly I feel like I'm making this book sound better than it is. I just don't care about the characters at all. The premise of the "trials" as an election process makes no sense. There's not enough world building to make any cohesive picture of what's going on in the background politics. Just an absolute waste of six and a half hours. ...more "

Young FMC is one such person and she is forced to pursue a career as a dragon hunter against her will.
