This book follows Viv through her first semester at Harker Academy, which is a school for hunters. Hunters protect the world from "deviants," which include beings such as demons, werewolves, vampires, etc. However, Viv's hiding the fact that she is an aeon, which is a rare, special kind of hunter who is born not only with hunter skills, but the compulsion to hunt that she is unable to ignore and senses that set her apart from other hunters.

She has been on her hunting own for a long time after the untimely death of her father until she meets Reid Graveheart, a demon who deflected from his own kind to train hunters at Harker Academy. While she distrusts him at first, especially because he was once apart of the Brood, an especially violent and deadly group of demons, she eventually ends up accepting his offer to come learn at the school.

The book goes on from there as Viv tries to (unsuccessfully) balance her new life from her old life, meets new friends, fights with and later comes to understand Reid a lot more, and hides her aeon heritage. There's missing girls, a deadly spells, mystery attacks, and so on that Viv and friends try to solve.

I can definitely see the comparisons made between Buffy the Vampire Slayer and this book -- there is plenty of quips and quirks from Viv that remind of me of the writing of the show.

While not perfect, I really enjoyed the relationship between Reid and Viv and how it evolves. It was by far my favorite part of the entire book, and I could not put it down whenever the two had scenes together. (view spoiler).

Where I feel like the book falters somewhat is Viv's hardheadedness -- it's explained away by her being an aeon and driven to hunt, but sometimes you want to shake the girl and have her stop making bad decisions. How her dual life is handled also feels weak -- her family/friend/boyfriend going along with the pretty implausible lies isn't something I bought, even though some of it is explained later. I also expected her friend Penny to have a twist or a reveal after being constantly being described as sweeter than sugar in almost every scene she's in.

Despite it's flaws, I really enjoyed this book. It was one of the few this year that I picked up and simply did not want to put down. ...more "

“There are no happy endings.
Endings are the saddest part,
So just give me a happy middle
And a very happy start.”
