What it's like to have super strict Korean parents, having to deal with being assistant concertmaster when she’s always been concertmaster, and struggles with boys. This book is for middle school and high school kids. Patti is very obsessed with grades and getting into the top colleges. Personally, I am not enjoying this book. It is all over the place, and the story is going nowhere. The concept of a book about an Asian American teenager is great, but they brought it out in a way that I didn’t really care for. The author is trying to imply that Patti is trying to live up to her strict Korean parents’ expectations, but she is just a normal teenager. The book made Patti’s character more of a stereotypical, grade- obsessed Asian. I find this to be boring, and just like every other book with Asian American characters. All of the characters seem to be based off of stereotypes, and the personalities of the characters are predictable. Patti is a stereotypical “nerdy” Asian. Her parents are pushy and strict. The white girl, Stephanie, is a popular and mean girl. This makes it just like every other realistic fiction teen book. I never found myself genuinely wanting to pick it up and read it. It always felt like a chore to sit down and read a chapter. All in all, this book was not good, and I do not recommend it....more
