Reporting a friend or family member to the police for a crime is a real world example of this theme. In 1995 the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski, was reported to the F.B.I by his own brother.

Mystery, realistic fiction, and autobiographical fiction are all of the genres in the “Red Kayak”. The book begins with three friends, Brady, J.T. and Digger growing up on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland in the present day. Digger becomes angry with the D'angelo's because they bought his grandma’s property. He and J.T. attempt to play a prank on them by drilling holes into their new red kayak but the plan backfires. One day there was an emergency, Mrs. D’angelos and her 3 year old son, Ben, are missing after going out in the kayak. Mrs D’angelo is found but the rescue team is still searching for Ben. Brady is the one who rescues Ben from the Bay. The child is still alive but dies the next morning. Digger and J.T. immediately stop talking and start avoiding Brady. Brady begins to realize who is to blame for the sinking of the red kayak. He is very troubled and does not know if he should report his friends to the authorities. Eventually the situation is eating away at him and he comes clean to his father.The author is skilled in using sensory details in describing how the Chesapeake bay looks, feels and sounds. In my opinion Priscilla Cummings does a magnificent job of describing the main characters; Brady, J.T., and Digger. She realistically describes their upbringing and background. I was not surprised when Digger drilled the holes into the kayak. He has a fiery temper because of his unstable family situation.

Within the first 30 pages of the book, the climax occurred. The author immediately hooked me in and I could not stop reading. I also enjoyed how I could connect with the book’s setting because my grandparents used to live and sail on the Chesapeake Bay. I loved visiting them when I was little. However I did not enjoy how dark the story line was. Ben’s death was disturbing because of his young age and how sudden it was. Priscilla Cummings’ writing style is very appealing to me because she uses modern vocabulary and a good word choice. She writes like someone is talking. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy mystery, realistic fiction, or autobiographical fiction. ...more "
