I read this book for school and I like the theme of the conditions of the Jews in Berlin. I think that this theme is very interesting, exciting and I want to know more about the conditions of the Jews in world war two. That is the reason I have read this book. Another theme of the book is love. The two brothers grew up with the idea that they were Jew brothers in a Jew family, but when Hitler become the boss of Nazi-Germany the parents told that one of the brother was by the birth adopted and not a Jew, because of this one brother was separated from his loved ones. This book has 614 pages and the writer is Ben Elton. Ben Elton also has something to do with this theme. He was also a Jew in world war two like the main characters in this book.

This book is about two brothers who lived as Jews with there Jew family in Berlin. In 1920 Frieda was pregnant of a twin and birth one child and one child was dead. After the birth Frieda got the chose to adopted a child from a family who was killed in the riots in Berlin. Frieda and her husband Wolfgang took this child and kept it secret that one of the twins was not a Jew. Paulus was the Jew and Otto was not. Frieda worked as a docter in a hospital and Wolfgang was a composer and played in a famous sort of strip club as a Jazz artist and on Saturday he also teached a group of children more about music among wich: Otto, Frieda, Silke and Dagmar. The children called this group "the Saturday Club". This Saturday Club was a close group. The two brothers both loved Dagmar. The Jew's family lived in peace and contentment. But then Adolf Hitler became the boss of Germany and this happing changes their lives completely. The Jewish family lost there friends and Frieda and Wolfgang both lost their jobs because of the boycot and since a lot of violence became part of their lives. The Saturday broke down, because Silke had a father who was a Nazi with a high rank and her family tried to escape but that failed and her father was arrested and killed in a camp. From that moment Otto and Paulus promised that they will protect Dagmar in the time of World War II. When the anti-Semitism rised Frieda and Wolfgang told the boys their secret about the apdopted child and that Otto being taken away by the Nazis. Otto came by the Napolas a nazischool and became a nazi with reluctance. In the front of Paulus, Dagmar and the family Stengel became more and more a hell over the years. Frieda made a escape effort for Paulus. Paulus could escape to the UK where he could study human rights. But when Dagmar told that she was in love with Paulus he decided to stay and protect Dagmar. Paulus changed his identity whit Otto who escaped to the UK so that Paulus could live as a nazi to protect Dagmar. Dagmar and Silke lived togther in the new home of Paulus when Paulus fought in the Sovjet-Unie. Paulus death in the war zone and Silke by the liberation of the Sovjet-Unie. The family Stengel all death in concentration camps. Otto and Dagmar (the survivors of the world war II) met each other while the Cold War in East-Berlin. Dagmar told that she never loved the both boys for real.

I like this book because the story is painting a vivid impresion of the live of a Jewish family during and after the reign of Hitler. I find this book very interesting because I'm interested in this historic period. I am currently on page 210. When I have finished the book, I will finalyse this review. ...more "
