I have read 14 pages of the science fiction novel by Michael Crichton, Prey. So far, the novel is focusing on the life of a 40 year old stay home father named Jack who quit his job at a company called ***WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS OF FIRST 14 PAGES!!!

I have read 14 pages of the science fiction novel by Michael Crichton, Prey. So far, the novel is focusing on the life of a 40 year old stay home father named Jack who quit his job at a company called MediaTronics after he figured out the company's president was having an affair with a young woman in accounting and performing other illegal actions involving the company's hardware. He describes himself as intelligent and strong skilled, however he has having troubles being a stay home father, and his wife has had to take many masculine responsibilities into her own hands.

Because I have not gotten very far into the book, I cannot accurately rate the book for its strength in conveying the author's message through themes and motifs. However, if I were to the judge the book's upcoming ability to keep me, as a reader, occupied, I would rate it a 4. I am rating it a 4 because I am a fan of Crichton's novel Jurrasic Park, and I feel as if he will depict similar motif strength and storytelling ability in this novel.

Crichton is very specific in providing interesting details relating to science which captivate the reader. "But the work was exciting, in a cutting-edge field. We wrote what are called distributed parallel processing or agent-based programs. These programs model biological processes by creating virtual agents inside the computer and then letting the agents interact to solve real-world problems. It sounds strange, but it works fine" (10). Crichton grabs interest from the reader by describing Jack's job at MediaTronics through scientifics terms such as virtual agents or biological processes.

Another reason why I believe this novel is a strong book is because the author is skilled in depicting emotion. After Jack's wife states that she is a more responsible parent following an incident involving their children, Jack then says "You're right. I'm sorry. You're right." (14) This use of three consecutive two word sentences and the repitition of the sentence "you're right" is useful in depicting Jack's emotion of self-disappointment as he is still stressed over his current stay home father situation. ...more "
