What I liked about the The Name of The Wind was the part in Kvothe’s flashback story where it started off with Cinder and Haliax, who ended up killing Kvothe’s parents, which in my opinion was a great start, but I believe they could expanded on this a little bit more throughout the story, also later on I like how he was on the streets of tarbean and was homeless, it was was a great part of the story to add and it really focuses on how Kvothe’s life develops. The imagery was very good in this book as well as how everything is structurally.
My opinion on what was bad about the book was how we managed to spend pages 247—535 in the university learning things while falling in love over and over again while getting getting bullied. I mean this is just under 300 pages of wasted content that we could have been focused on Haliax and Cinder which caught who are the main antagonists, instead they focused on Ambrose who I believe should have had a role in the story, but a minor one, more as a minor antagonist rather than a major villain, A good comparison for this would be Henry Bowers from Stephen Kings IT or Merle Dixon from The Walking Dead as both were very minor characters but they both had their sense of meddling with the protagonists without overshadowing the main villain in the time space in which would be The governor from the walking dead and Pennywise from IT. Ambrose as the main antagonist just doesn’t suit well in my opinion. Plus a lot of the detail on the university could have been put down to 100-150 pages, this kinda reminds me of the entire season 7 of the Walking Dead, Negan bashing someone’s head in was the best part, but the rest of the season was everyone talking about earning revenge on the saviors but not actually doing anything about it.
Also in the book there was a “Draccus”. I could see where Rothfuss might think that this creative but in all honesty the Draccus is literally a dumbed down dragon that eats vegetables and doesn’t fly, as for the part itself, while although it was stereotypical it honestly wasn’t a bad add in the story. It is quite stereotypical for a fantasy novel but it could have fit as an action bit “It’s a herbivore. It’s like a big cow.” (595). If you’re going to make monster for the love of jesus don’t make it a herbivore, that just ruins all the badassery of the monster described.
I would recommend this book to anyone that’s a big fan of fantasy as that’s the crowd it goes for, but bear in mind that if you’re looking for action this isn’t the book. This book is extremely realistic for a fantasy book (this is a good quality.). However, this is another thing to consider when reading this book.
In conclusion I’d have to rate this book 3/5. It was just okay, there a lot of parts that really made me lose interest and I wasn’t super engaged but It wasn't awful as at the same time because it had a few good points in the story as well. They just didn't outweigh the bad ones in my opinion ...more "
