I have to admit that I've had a really hard time getting through the book. I've borrowed it from the library and have had it about 3 months before completing it.

This is because, well, the beginning was awfully boring. I understand in hindsight this was probably done to establish the 1000 characters of the Houses and set them up as actual beings rather than a slurry of names. Still, this is why it took me 3 months to read it. I was not invested in these characters dicking around for 50% of the book.

Furthermore, the plot was a little lacking in the beginning. I understood that Harrow and Gideon were being sent off for Harrow to become a Lyctor but... That's all I got. I was thoroughly confused as to why all these characters got put into a mansion/castle just to hang out. There was no structure to the path to Lyctorship. I know the point of it was to solve a puzzle, but it seemed a little out of touch - yes, it's a secret, but as a reader, the world building was vague and lacking. As my sister pointed out, the narrator was Gideon, who understandably probably also had no idea what was going on as well. Had the POV been from Harrow, maybe we would've gotten a more in depth story.

Yeah yeah I know this doesn't sound like a 4 out of 5 review so here is why I gave it a decent rating.

The 50% of time devoted to these characters fucking around definitely contributed to why I became so invested after the first half when SOMETHING ACTUALLY HAPPENED. So ok Muir, I see you.

It was a little bit of a double edged sword tho, as I took 3 months to read just the first 50% of the book and literally 1-2 days to finish the other half when [INCITING INCIDENT] occurred. I had forgotten a lot about some of the characters, spacing out reading it this much, so a reread might be needed to really absorb the nuances.

After the plot was driven forward though, it was definitely developing into a beautiful snowball of story. I was more invested in the story as things actually HAPPENED. I found myself having more fun reading the last half of the book and my initial 3 rating turned into a 4 out of 5.

I am still in the opinion that Muir could've focused on some world building the first half of the book to bolster against the lack of plot to make it easier to become invested. I felt like I was just reading about a bunch of OCs thrown into a monkey house in the beginning... Honestly might have abandoned this book if I did not have a commitment to use this knowledge to get closer to my sister!

I'm invested now tho, the book had a great snowball of plot. Will read the next books. 💕 ...more "
