I have always been interested in reading about this subject, however it is sad and depressing, I believe it is better for people to learn and face the fact that it did happen, and give respect to those whom had have to go through it.

This book is a memoir about Eliezer, a Jewish teenager whose hometown is Sighet, in Hungarian Transylvania. In his hometown he spends most of his time the Torah (the first five books of the Old Testament) and the Cabbala (a doctrine of Jewish mysticism). However in the spring the Nazis ad their Henchmen, the Hungarian police began to shipping trainloads of Jews to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Luckily Elie's family is part of the final convoy.

At their arrival at Auschwitz the first “selections” are being made. This is when the authorities separate the strong from the weak. Once Elie and his family arrive to the selection his mother and younger sister are separated from him and his father. They never see each other again.

The rest of the memoir is about how Elie and his father go through, firsthand with the events in the concentration camp. They get little to no food and witness horrible hangings. During the sad events most of the Jews including Elie himself show little to no emotion because during this time they were treated cruelly and so in turn they were drained of their emotion. Elie had felt that they had just simply become moving beings with no life.

Wiesel writes this book with a tone of seriousness and somber due to the fact that is a memoir and written firsthand. The mood is extremely gloomy to the point of total tragedy.
I would recommend this book to readers whom do not take the Holocaust lightly. It is a very serious matter and should be treated with respect. The style of writing is not a beach reader but in fact a critical thinking and in depth. ...more "
