During his research on the internet, he comes to many intriguing references to the existence of another group of intelligent people: the fairies. Hardly something out of a fairy tale, these fairies are decades ahead of the humans technologically speaking. These fairies have been living belowground for centuries without being detected by humans. During his research into them, Artemis discovers the existence of their massive secret wealth and masterminds an ingenious plot to steal some of it to fund expeditions for his father. With his bodyguard Butler, he uses the information he found to seek out and kidnap an elf. This leads to consequences far greater than he had anticipated, as the one he captured is a captain of an elite underground police force and kidnapping her leads the Lower Elements Police to lay siege to his door.

Eoin Colfer takes an interesting approach by having an omniscient narrator that switches between the thoughts of multiple characters on both sides of the conflict. This shows each character's reactions to a specific event and allows the reader to view multiple perspectives.

In the beginning, Artemis is coldhearted and barely has a conscience, putting others in mortal danger as an idea of fun and for his “demonstrations” such as using a bomb in whaler when the police commander Root is on it. He rarely jokes thinking “More jokes. Next thing he'd be wearing
clown shoes and turning cartwheels in the main hall.” However, during the book, he starts feeling bad for the trouble he causes others. While in the beginning he only cares about money and his fortune, near the end he is willing to give up massive amounts to help the ones he loves.

I thought this book was very interesting. It had lots of intriguing developments one after the other. There weren’t many dull points in the book and there were lots of jokes and funny moments in between both by the characters and the dry humor of the narrator referring to Butler fighting smugglers “It was six against one. You had to feel sorry for them.” The way Colfer managed to show two opposing forces and show that both of them in a positive light and make them both the “good guys” in the story is amazing. ...more "
