Jade City is an electrifying, action-packed urban fantasy that follows the Kaul family of the No Peak clan as tensions rise between them and their biggest rivals and threat.

I was completely blown away by this book. The major highlight is the strong, well-developed cast of characters. They are profoundly complex and flawed. You love them, but you also hate that you love them.

The family dynamics and the relationship between the Kaul siblings is very intricate. Lan is soft-hearted and beloved. Shae is independent and intelligent. Anden is trying to figure out his identity and where he fits in the world due to his complicated background. Hilo is my favorite morally grey character I've read by far. He's the most feared figure on the streets, may sometimes be rash, but deep down he has a sensitive and compassionate heart and is fiercely loyal to his family and to the clan. That doesn't even scratch the surface of all the other well-written characters!

Although the prose was incredible, I thought the dialogue wasn't as strong. I would've also liked a clearer explanation on the different Jade disciplines. However, I just finished reading the sequel, Jade War, and let me tell you it gets SO. MUCH. BETTER!

Jade City was such a thrill ride from start to finish. There's clan war, intergenerational family politics, martial arts and magic, betrayal and deception, and the best morally grey characters you can't help but root for. ...more "
