It seems like people read this book in one of two ways.
1. They read it as if you are peeking into someone’s journal. Watching them struggle and strive to be “good” and accept human nature.
2. As a book written for an audience hurling cheesy sounding It seems like people read this book in one of two ways.
1. They read it as if you are peeking into someone’s journal. Watching them struggle and strive to be “good” and accept human nature.
2. As a book written for an audience hurling cheesy sounding commandments from on high.
If you read it like #2 I’m sorry, but all you’re going to get out of it is a book full of quips that you could slap into any of the hundreds of thousands of shitty car ads that exist as a call to action to spend money.
If you read it like #1 you get to see that even as an emperor of Rome, Marcus Aurelius struggles with everyday decisions and distractions. He strives to be better and to be human. It is so relatable that you may forget that you are reading the journal of an emperor.
I read a hard copy and highlighted some of the more impactful parts for me to revisit later.
