"You know what I really appreciate in this book? The complete lack of sexual tension or romantic feeling between Grace and Stratt. They're platonic with masses of professional respect and nothing else which is so refreshing!

(Then again, there are 300+ pages left... If any doomed yearning comes into play later in the story I will genuinely roll my eyes out of their sockets)"

"Odysseus' main priorities are to get rich, spill the tea, have a good cry, and then go home. What a relatable king." — Aug 19, 2026 04:42PM

"Oh boy, this book was first published in 1999, and it very much is a product of its time. Despite loving the film and having read this before (granted over a decade ago), I was *not* prepared for the onslaught of problematic elements. Obviously, Rennison couldn't have foreseen the exposure of the disgusting Rolf Harris, but other things like the lesbophobia and racist remarks are definitely not OK." — Jul 10, 2026 05:28PM

Cassandra Clare
“Wear that scarf," he said, pointing to a blue cashmere scarf hanging on a peg. "It matches your eyes."
Alec looked at it. Suddenly he was filled with hate - for the scarf, for Magnus, and most of all for himself. "Don't tell me," he said. "The scarf's a hundred years old, and it was given to you by Queen Victoria right before she died, for special services to the Crown or something."
Magnus sat up. "What's gotten into you?"
Alec stared at him. "Am I the newest thing in this apartment?"
"I think that honor goes to Chairman Meow. He's only two."
"I said newest, not youngest," Alec snapped.”
― Cassandra Clare, City of Lost Souls

“Her name is Brienne," Jaime said. "Brienne, the maid of Tarth. You are still maiden, I hope?"

Her broad homely face turned red. "Yes."

"Oh, good," Jaime said. "I only rescue maidens.”
― George R.R. Martin, A Storm of Swords
