When I finished this book, I was left with almost a dizzying feeling of how happy it made me, or maybe that was just from how I sobbed through the last 50% of it. I'm already excited for my next re-read, and I generally don't re-read books.

Red specifically made me cry over and over starting at the 42% point. I made a goodreads update at this point. I'm pretty sure out of the 110+ books I've read, none of them have a progress update. The writing itself was beautiful. I will admit it was a bit of slow and confusing start, but Blue's Ozymandias quote early on won me over a little. The plot and what was actually happening became clearer as the book went on (I feel like this was an intentional writing choice?), and it was so brilliantly done, even though I did predict some things.

This book made every part of my reading brain happy. Looking at the books I've read, I'd break my reading tastes into 3 categories. Literary, Romance and Story (Fantasy, Scifi etc.). A book will satisfy 2 areas at best. This one satisfies all 3.

Literary:
The references, motifs, extended metaphors were built upon and revisited so perfectly. The writing felt so intentional like every single sentence was carefully thought about. This book is only 200 or so pages, but there is so much packed into every single sentence it feels longer than that. I've never had any desire to re-read a book but I already feel like this one requires a re-read as there's so much still left to unpack. It touches on so many insights of humanity.

Romance:
Most romantic book I've ever read (as someone who reads a lot of romance), what can I even say. Their love was unreal - grand and epic and cosmic (in the almost literal sense for this book). How can a book paint a romance between two characters that didn't even speak a single word to each other's faces? The epistolary format worked really well, I tend to not enjoy this format of books but this worked really well for me. This book scratched the romance itch better than the other (traditional) romances I'm currently reading. (For future reference, The Fall by Tal Bauer and A Seditious Affair by KJ Charles - both stellar romance authors)

Story:
By this I mean world-building and plot (action, adventure, politics etc.) and I wasn't expecting this book to deliver on this considering I spent the first 35% with no idea what was going on. But the plot and world building pretty much sneaked up on me and it was brilliant. (Anything I say will be spoilers so)

I thought it was a bad time to pick up a book like this, with denser prose harder to decipher, since I'm in the middle of a reading slump, but it was so good that it pulled me right out (at least for the duration of this book). I was immersed, which often is harder to do with more complex writing, but this achieved it anyway.

I have so much love for this book and wrote this review right upon finishing it. I'm sure I will have more thoughts to add in the coming days. I know that this definitely has made my favourite shelf and may be competing for the number 1 spot. Most of my favourites left me feeling sad, this one had so many tears but made me so happy.

I heard of this book so many years ago (before my 5 year reading break) and was so uninterested at the time. I'm so happy I ended up picking it up, I'm even grateful for whatever 'need for impactful romance' phase I'm going through with books right now that led me to choosing this. ...more "
