House of Sky and Breath was a worthy sequel. Well written in every single aspect, it further cements SJM as a force to be reckoned with in the fantasy genre, and continues the story of Bryce Quinlan and her gang in a satisfying fashion.

The introduction of rebellion through the story’s bird’s eye view of Midgard’s civil war happening broadened the scope of the series to epic proportions. Picking up right where the first book left off, we learn more about the world of Midgard, see more of Lunathion, meet characters old and new, and continue to uncover the mysteries.

Each and every character arc and POV was seamlessly integrated with the story, and the complexities between their interconnections and experiences was so well balanced; everything managed to be cohesive throughout the narrative. Learning more about the human vs. Vanir conflict against each other and the Asteri, as well as some secrets uncovered by the book’s ending was very fascinating. Seeing more of the world was also very engaging, as it kept me on the edge of my seat.

Bryce and Hunt grew on me SO MUCH MORE in this book. I’d already been incredibly attached to them from the first book, but MAN am I rooting for them. All of the romances were SO well written, and the spicy scenes were incredibly sexy yet also super intimate, which I very much appreciated. I’m also pleased with how their inner circle broadened: other supporting characters such as Ruhn, Tharion, Ithan, Fury, Juniper, Hypaxia, and the rest of the ensemble cast was very much a nice expansion of the story on SJM’s part. Every character has purpose and feels fully developed, yet brings something new and distinctive to the table.

The action sequences, tension, buildup, and ultimate climax and ending of this book is everything a good fantasy book needs to have. This was incredibly paced, well written, and cinematically imagined. SJM takes us into a deeper dive into the story of Bryce Quinlan, and leaves you with a blown mind by the very last page. I’m SO grateful I waited until this year to binge them because waiting TWO YEARS for House of Flame and Shadow after that cliffhanger would have been CRUEL. Mad props to the fans who did suffer that wait.

And although I’d been spoiled by the ending and other things before reading this book and the series, SJM still managed to surprise me over and over with her plot twists and the reveals. Also, that final moment when the ACOTAR/CC crossover begins — henceforth launching what I believe will lead to an eventual full on Maasverse crossover — was STILL written in a way that had me on the verge of a breakdown.

All in all, Crescent City shows SJM’s growth as a fantasy/romantasy writer and the very best skillsets/lessons she’s learned as she’s further refined her craft. This woman is a powerhouse. There’s a reason I’ve always loved her books and writing since ToG, and there’s a reason she’s one of my biggest inspirations as a writer. I cannot WAIT to see how the story unfolds as I read House of Flame and Shadow, and to see what the future entails for CC4 (which I suspect will be called House of Many Waters.) And I cannot wait to see how it all ties together.

TL;DR - An incredible, sexy, enthralling, heart pounding, breathtaking, action-packed addition to an iconic series by SJM. A worthy continuation of the story of Midgard, and of Bryce Quinlan and her gang. Full of romance, action, plot twists, lush worldbuilding, and story that leaves you devastated and clamoring for more, House of Sky and Breath further cements SJM as a force to be reckoned with within the fantasy canon, and maintains the standard the Crescent City series - and the Maasverse as a whole - continues to uphold. Brilliantly written with incredible pacing, this book is a wild ride to be enjoyed from start to finish. Hands down an epic masterpiece. ...more "
