The build is spectacular, the resolve ooooooh so much better! Everything has a purpose!! It tugs on some sad strings the entire way, even the happier moments laced with numb sadness. (But isn’t that the point?)
Schwab finds very clever ways to infuse poetic elements and that, I’d have to say, is one of my favorite things! The writing is so beautiful, so thoughtful. The story’s pace moved almost tauntingly. (BUT AGAIN, isn’t that the point?) I felt her choices, whether intentional or not, give us emotional insight on different characters. You feel the unease, the sadness, the longing, the rage, even the happiness. I didn’t want it to end. It took me longer than usual to finish because I kept prolonging it. Really, “perhaps it is just that happiness is frightening.” So I slowed it down in fear of it breaking apart! Which is actually quite funny looking back.
