The Way of the Warrior
The book I am reviewing is The Way of the Warrior in the Young Samurai series. The author of The Way of the Samurai is Chris Bradford and the publisher is Disney Hyperion. It was published in the U.K. in 2008.I think that this is the best book you can find and that everyone should read this book because it teaches many lessons that you could use in real life.
Now the main character in The Way of the Warrior is Jack Fletcher. He is a 12 year old rigging monkey, or the one who unfurls the sails by climbing the central post, who is on the English ship the Alexandria with his father John Fletcher heading to Japan. Now Jack’s father is a pilot, or one who uses sea charts to tell the heading of where the ship should go, and they were heading to Japan to trade with them. At the time England thought that Japan was just a myth and didn’t believe it existed, but some people did believe it was real and so would try to sail to Japan to see if was real. So Jack was sailing with his father when they finally reached Japan. The entire crew was happy until they were attacked by ninja and everyone was killed except Jack who escaped and was saved by a Japanese samurai warrior who ended up adopting Jack and taking him to his Samurai school to learn the way of the warrior. Throughout his training, Jack learned many important lessons such as patience, wisdom, and respect. So reading this book also taught me new lessons that I use today, such as patience and respect.

The setting of the book is held in ancient Japan when samurai and daimyos lived and ruled. Another one of the key settings is the school where Jack learns his samurai skills which is the Niten Ichi Ryu which is the school of the samurai who saved and adopted Jack. Most of the entire book’s setting is the Niten Ichi Ryu where Jack gets in his first fight and learns all of his samurai skills along with his fellow classmates who train.

The plot is also very interesting, being that Jack has an incredible adventure through the entire book. Such as first all the people he ever knew were killed by ninjas. Then he was adopted by a Samurai and taken to his school to learn the way of the warrior. After that he makes new friends, but also new enemies. Of course all of the time though, he wants revenge against the ninja who took his father’s life, Dragon Eye and keeping his father’s secret chart book out of enemy hands.

In all I believe that The Way of the Warrior is a book that everyone should read because of the great lessons they teach throughout the book and how great of a story it truly is. ...more "
