The dialogue is insanely cringey, and it comes across as B-movie dialogue with the way it approaches exposition and character. The author seems to be aware of this, so he makes sure to emphasize that neither character is used to talking about their feelings, which seems to be excuse as much as it is explanation.

Here is some early dialogue between Jonah and his sister, Nell: "Did she ever see it? [...] That side of you that you like to pretend isn't there. That side of you that drank a whole bottle of tequila with me one night at Carson's and then broke Tyler Malick's jaw and a handful of his teeth for talking shit."

Jonah's described as having always been a thin, lanky, greasy-looking fellow ("Body too tall, too skinny. Cheeks socked-out and sallow"), so it's really bizarre that he's also the type of character who successfully lets his fists do the talking. You're telling me this lanky Slenderman is 2-tapping bikers at dive bars?

And then maybe 10 pages after this exchange, they go to a bar and start another bar fight with bikers? Is this what counts as foreshadowing these days? "Across the barroom, Jonah darted in and fired a vicious cross into the face of the first biker, a sturdy bearded type sporting a brush cut. The impact rang out with a hard, raw-boned clack."

The perspective also switches between Nell and Jonah, which would be an interesting technique if they didn't have nearly identical mannerisms. He's resentful and full of simmering rage, she's caustic and full of bubbling rage. A real Gork and Mork situation.

I will say that their dynamic is interesting. It's pretty rare that you get a sibling narrative where one of them is actively trying to make the other shittier.

According to Kindle I'm only 15% of the way through right now, but I don't know how much more goodwill the author's earned through the prologue. ...more "
