I loved it in the darkest, saddest way. Both the character and story developments were nothing short of brilliant. The details given to the world SenLinYu created were mind-blowing at times. The world of alchemy and magic-that-isn’t-magic was painted so vividly it often felt real. It was as if I was reading a true memoir.

Helena, our man character is so precisely and consistently written that you want to know her so well, so quickly. And from one page to the next, you need to know what choices she is making and how it’s going to affect her. You can’t put it down because what heartbreak or brief moment of relief is waiting around the corner? She is faced with impossible choice after impossible choice, but what makes her such a powerful character is that she never hesitates to make a choice and see it through.

And then there is the other side of the war. The dark, powerful, frightening side. The side you think you could never forgive but SenLinYu reminds us over and over again that we are all just human and given unthinkable situations, we often do the unthinkable to survive and ensure the survival of those we love.

I realize there is controversy surrounding some of these themes, but what is happening in this book shows some of the most horrific realities of war, along with some trauma-influenced choices. They deserve their story, even if not everyone likes the way it played out. Yes it will curdle your stomach at times, or force the wind from your chest, or leave you in tears but a work of fiction can still mirror what some people in the world have considered real life, and this book absolutely made me think “would I have done the same?” and “would I have felt the same?” over and over again.

I hope there is a sequel, it seems as though there could be, and I’d be so, so happy to read anything SenLinYu puts on paper again. 🖤

Further, the narrator for the audiobook, Sasha Maarleveld was absolutely phenomenal. Every voice was perfect, every line delivered how I imagined it should be, and every scene was captured with emotion and a depth of understanding that is so often missing in audiobook narration. 👏🏻 ...more "
