"Reading the line "sometimes there's, like, leaves and things in the mouth", spoken by coroner Lamar, is even funnier when you read it in the voice of the actor who plays him in the film. Unexpectedly made me laugh while reading what is otherwise a very serious chapter." Jul 07, 2026 05:51AM

"Chapter 1:

The first couple of lines IMMEDIATELY drew me in. Incredibly relatable so far, in terms of the concept of "masking"; as a young neurodiverse child I unknowingly masked, and I did it again as a queer teenager.

Finding Mishima's writing style a little hard to follow, though not sure if this is just due to translations."

E.E. Cummings

pity this busy monster, manunkind,

not. Progress is a comfortable disease:
your victim (death and life safely beyond)

plays with the bigness of his littleness
--- electrons deify one razorblade
into a mountainrange; lenses extend
unwish through curving wherewhen till unwish
returns on its unself.
A world of made
is not a world of born --- pity poor flesh

and trees, poor stars and stones, but never this
fine specimen of hypermagical

ultraomnipotence. We doctors know

a hopeless case if --- listen: there's a hell
of a good universe next door; let's go”
E.E. Cummings

Louisa May Alcott
“Women, they have minds, and they have souls, as well as just hearts. And they’ve got ambition, and they’ve got talent, as well as just beauty. I’m so sick of people saying that love is all a woman is fit for.”
Louisa May Alcott, Little Women

Louisa May Alcott
“I'm happy as I am, and love my liberty too well to be in a hurry to give it up for any mortal man.”
Louisa May Alcott, Good Wives

Fyodor Dostoevsky
“Above all, don't lie to yourself. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love.”
Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

Jim Thompson
“There are thirty-two ways to write a story, and I’ve used every one, but there is only one plot – things are not as they seem.”
Jim Thompson
