The story itself is rather complex, but it's presentation is so simple that one would imagine the storyline to be commonplace. In it's juxtaposition of a complex life with a rather simple lifestyle, one finds a bit of romance and charm, and charm is the main word the would use to describe this book.
As mentioned earlier, this is not the kind of book that should only be read once. Every time I read this book, Yoshimoto somehow unveils some charming sentence that I've somehow missed.
My favourite line:
"The night was so deathly silent that I felt I could hear the sound of the stars moving across the heavens."
When I first read that line, I heard that sound. A little indescribable (I'm too shy to try), Yoshimoto successfully created not only vivid imagery, but tapped into another sensory reaction from one of her readers.
A lovely book. I recommend it to everyone....more
