I want to start by saying this book, to me, was vastly different from the first two. ToG and CoM have drama, and violence, and romance, yes. They’re amazing, yes. Heir of Fire, though, has so much more to it. It has new characters, exponential growth, rebellion, magic, sacrifice, heritage, background and more.

Although all the new characters were a little daunting to me at first and seemed to make the book drag on a bit, I did eventually fall in love with EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. OF. THEM.

We’re able to see a completely new side of Celaena, which was a little difficult for me but so, so necessary. The girl who was once a badass, ruthless, cunning assassin shows us how truly broken she is following the deaths of so many she loved. She struggles with her self-worth, her past, and guilt she’s been holding onto for over 10 years. She comes to terms with her future and the role she must play to save the kingdom from the King of Adarlan.

“She was the Heir of Ash and Fire, and she would bow to no one.”

One thing I can say I did find a little bit lacking was the sections on Chaol and Dorian. Their friendship took a tumulus turn in the last book, and watching them struggle to regain it in this one was difficult. Although, I will say, they both were able to overcome some intense battles within themselves and fight for what they know is right!

All of the new characters, who originally overwhelmed me, made me fall in love with them by the end. There’s Rowan, who’s a dark, mysterious, intense, protective warrior Fae. The genuine friend that Celaena needed to pick herself up by her bootstraps, face her past, and rise as the true queen she is.

There’s Aedion, the fierce general who wants nothing more than to see Celaena returned to the crown. And he will stop at nothing to get her there.

Then, there’s Manon, heir of the Blackbeak witches coven. She may be fighting with the King, but she’s fighting more within herself. She’s known her whole life that witches don’t have hearts, but then where is this sudden affection for her wyvern coming from?

The plot is 100% character driven, and I’m here for that. It tied brilliantly to the last two books, while also setting the stage for some turmoil to occur in the next. The battle scenes are as brutal and intense as before, some of them both gut-wrenching and heart-breaking. That scene, where everyone keeps telling Celaena, “get up, get up” I literally couldn’t get up because I was SOBBING. ...more "
