The relation I didn’t expect to become this invested in these characters. I went into this book thinking it would be mostly about teenage crushes and fights, but it turned out to be so much deeper, more complex, and far more emotional than I imagined.

The relationships between the characters—the friendships, the bonds, the personal struggles—are incredibly compelling. I loved how the author allows space for long conversations and detailed interactions. Those everyday moments, the slow-building dynamics, all contribute to the emotional weight of the big events later on. It truly feels like watching real lives unfold.

This is a love story filled with sacrifice, heroism, heartbreak, and tragedy. I laughed and cried with them, completely swept up in the writing. Every time I had to put the book down to return to real life, I felt like something was missing—like part of my mind was still stuck inside their world.

As someone who, fortunately, has never experienced violence, I found some of the scenes incredibly disturbing and difficult to read—so I imagine readers with past trauma could be easily triggered. It’s definitely something to be aware of.

I’ve seen people criticize the writing as “cringe,” but honestly, we’re reading the perspectives of teenagers. And in many ways, I found Shannon and Johnny more mature than most teens—though with everything they’ve been forced to handle, it makes sense.

I loved these characters deeply. I suffered with them, feared for them, cried with them, laughed with them. They’re charismatic, flawed, vivid, and unforgettable. And now I can’t wait to dive into the books that focus on Joey.

As someone who isn’t Irish, I also loved being immersed in the small-town Irish setting—the culture, the everyday life, the rugby world, the music, the early-2000s atmosphere. It felt rich and authentic.

Keeping 13 is definitely heavier and more emotionally intense than Binding 13, but both are beautifully complex in their own ways.
