So clearly it’s not merely about realism imo. having said this, there’s one line in this book that is an unexpected GRRM dub. Catelyn is finding out that Robb has decided to leave her at Seagard for the remainder of the war and she thinks: “Is this my punishment for opposing him about Jon Snow? Or for being a woman, and worse, a mother?” (635). Yes, so often are women punished in these books, as they are in real life—then and now— for these crimes we commit. I think my main issue— and the main issue other women take— with it is that I get so tired of it in my real life that I truly do not want to read about it in my escapes. It is not the same for men reading these books, i fear they do not even realize the exhaustion it causes.
TLDR: 5 stars but minus 2 stars for the sexism and sexual violence....more
