I'm reading it in between other books while waiting for my most recent order to arrive. The first time I read this book, years ago, I faithfully read every word. This time around, I'm skipping entire sections. I'm not that interested in the American character, nor am I interested in the Russian character. I read the chapters where each of them first appeared, but skipped all the subsequent ones. That still leaves an awful lot of book to read. One reason I'm not interested in Gus's story is because it's pretty much the same story as Lady Maud's, who gives up the man she loves, for the sake of his and his father's careers. Until she doesn't. Ethel Williams, a servant in the household of Lady Maud's brother, Earl Fitzherbert is also too self-sacrificing. The Russian character, Grigori, is also self-sacrificing. He gives up his ticket to America to save his brother. I can't remember exactly from what. That's the part I skipped. I know characters need obstacles and challenges for the story to be exciting, but it would be nice if Follett could come up with something else. There's just too much story here. Follett could have left out any two of the our characters he follows and had two fat books, instead of one humongous one. But the characters I do follow, Lady Maud and her brother the Earl and Maud's heartthrob, the German nobleman Walter von Ulrich, Ethel Williams and her brother Billy Williams are pretty engaging. Maud and Ethel are suffragettes, so that's interesting. The Earl's a jerk, but I kind of like him anyway. Walter's gallant. Billy's a soldier and also gallant. There are battle scenes, scenes of family discord, a mine disaster and that's only in the first half of the book. The characters are well-drawn. There's lots of detail, some of it interesting, other details are way too much. But the book is engaging enough to bring me back to it between other, faster-paced, less bloated books. I think I started it October something or other. Who knows when I'll finish. ...more "
