It is almost impossible for me to put down, in fact, and unlike many classics I can read it in small snippets and still get into it. If this is comparable to Ulysses in terms of difficulty, then apparently I am like the Reinhold Messner of hard book reading. The book is insane, and obscene, and hilarious, and really really sad. It's about Europe in the immediate aftermath of WWII, and covers a massive amount of ground. I am about 2/3 of the way through it but cannot imagine how it will end. It is also one of the best books I have ever read. I recommend it to anyone who is not shocked by a few graphic scenes here and there. If you can make it 50 pages in, then you'll want to finish it....more
