"I've been trying to read this book for years now. It's super dense but so very interesting! I hope that in updating my progress on here, it will help hold me accountable to sticking with it." — Mar 13, 2024 11:36PM

Clearly, this was not an AdLenitent. He’d invented the term for parishioners who came to church only during Advent or Lent to make penitence. He also privately referred to those who attended Mass only on Christmas and Easter as Chreasters.
“and when we speak we are afraid
our words will not be heard
nor welcomed
but when we are silent
we are still afraid
So it is better to speak
remembering
we were never meant to survive”

“The struggle is inner: Chicano, indio, American Indian, mojado, mexicano, immigrant Latino, Anglo in power, working class Anglo, Black, Asian--our psyches resemble the bordertowns and are populated by the same people. The struggle has always been inner, and is played out in outer terrains. Awareness of our situation must come before inner changes, which in turn come before changes in society. Nothing happens in the "real" world unless it first happens in the images in our heads.”
