" While highly readable, I was at a loss for words over this mother daughter relationship. Blythe has an apparently sociopathic daughter, but maybe not. Blythe has an apparently sociopathic daughter, but maybe not. It could just be that she had post partum after having her and didn’t connect/bond well. But through all their ups and downs when the girl was little, she never snatched her ass up and cleared the air with her. She felt guilt for some of the ways she had ignored her daughter and never made any overt effort to reconnect. Then, once she knew the girl was a cold killer, it didn’t occur to her before she wanted to have another baby that her crazy as daughter would probably try to kill the baby? Blythe is sort of inept. She never sought help to connect with her daughter when she was young. She never insisted that they all get help after the death of the son and most importantly she complacently stayed when she wasn’t believed. She didn’t insist that they get to the bottom of the stroller incident- and there had to be intersection cameras, AND, when Violet was about to kill the kid on the beach, Blythe had her chance to prove to people that the daughter was crazy but instead of quietly getting her husband’s attention and showing him what Violet was really like, she yelped and diffused the situation before anyone else could witness it. So while I wanted to see what happened at the end, I was exasperated. You mean to tell me that Blythe could be so outspoken and honest with her husband, but couldn’t just make an appointment for a psychiatrist and get him onboard? Violet was so manipulative I don’t understand why at some point she didn’t just sit her down and say “what’s your goal here? You killed the kid at the playground, you killed your brother, why not just kill me?” Figuring out the girl’s motivation and flipping the script on her would have been interesting. I don’t understand any of the familial communication. I have three kids and I’m able to talk to them, or schedule an appointment for a psych eval without caring what my husband thought. Finally, the chapter at the end just sucked my soul out and made me realize what absolute TRASH her husband was- when he admitted that Violet cut up all of Blythe’s clothes and they laughed about it. I guess at the end, I was completely unbothered that Jett met some bad end because they all knew what they were dealing with and no one did anything. I guess the bottom line is, it reminded me of pedophile culture- where no one lives in reality and can’t fathom that someone could molest their kid. It was like the same mentality. ...more "
