We did When I first heard the title of this book, I thought this was no different from any other books that insists the wrong action of white people and the plight of black people. Also, we already have learned about black discrimination many times. We did lots of report assignment, debate, discussion or something else about segregation. So frankly speaking, this book didn't really give me much interest at first. But soon after, I realized that this book was really great. The fascinating thing about this book is that it is different from books dealing with common black discrimination. Ordinary books describe white as bad and black as good or innocent in order to emphasize the pain that black people suffered and effectively communicate the fact that they were oppressed. For examples, the book shows some moral and good white people like the policeman who killed her friend and also Chris, Starr’s white boyfriend. And like King, there were also some really bad black people. So this book didn't end up singing the praises of black people and condemning white people. It seems to be a book that solves discrimination by the generalization principle which I learned in moral class. So I think the author of this book, Angie Thomas did invest much time to make a masterpiece. Another fascinating thing was the condition that protagonist of this story, Starr is in. She is a young girl who had to watch two of her friends die, as a result of the prejudice that was placed on the people of her skin color. She was also betrayed by her white friend and had to stop acting like black in order not to be neglected or unloved in a white school. Even though she has a boyfriend, she could not rely on him because of the trauma that she has. Like this, the main character is in a harsh condition. This book is a main character's narrative story. This harsh environment has made us more sympathetic and emphasize to the pain and discrimination that black people suffer. Not only black discrimination, there are so many other discrimination around the world. Just like Starr's decision to take courage and move on to the world, I hope and wish everyone who are being discriminated could finally gain courage and adapt to the society well without thinking that they are second-class citizens....more
