Funny story. Back in 2020, when I had no idea who SJM is, I got HOEAB on kindle and gave up 4% in. I was not a fantasy reader so I had no idea what to expect. So when I picked this up in August, I knew exactly what to expect.

The intensity of this book hits you like a freight train but my god is it worth it. Every detail, every tidbit of lore all pieces together like a deathly, painful puzzle and from start to finish - this was a masterpiece. SJM outdid herself with this world and I’m here to stay indefinitely.

‘𝙄𝙩’𝙨 𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙞𝙚𝙧 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙢𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙪𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙄 𝙖𝙢. 𝙄𝙩 𝙡𝙚𝙩𝙨 𝙢𝙚 𝙨𝙚𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙖𝙧𝙚.’

Bryce Quinlan is one smart and tough cookie. After being dealt with the worst possible card, she is tasked with finding out the truth with the Fallen angel, Hunt Athalar.

She is quick witted, funny, not afraid to clap back and knows her worth. Bryce’s confidence but also her pain, sorrow, depression and anxiety are so well explored in this book. Her love for Danika and her loyalty, drive and tenancy was inspiring. I adore and love her so much.

‘𝘽𝙧𝙮𝙘𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙜𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙖 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙚, 𝙃𝙪𝙣𝙩. 𝙎𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙙 𝙨𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙨𝙣’𝙩, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙨𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙨. 𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙗𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙩𝙤 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚.’

Hunt Athalar. An infamous Fallen angel rebel, who works as a personal assassin to the Governor. Hunt carries a lot of self-loathing and baggage of past trauma. So it was incredibly satisfying to see Bryce break through that hard exterior. The tension and banter between the two were one of my favourite parts of the book.

‘𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙡𝙚𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙢𝙮 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝙖𝙘𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙛𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙤𝙢 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙥 𝙢𝙮 𝙛𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙨.’

Lehabah. ❤️ A fire sprite, lover of smutty shows, a guardian of the gallery and Bryce’s friend. I adored Lehabah’s innocence and naivety but also bravery and loyalty. Her little quirks added so much charm to the overall plot and her loyalty was admirable.

‘𝙏𝙤 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙚, 𝙩𝙤 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚, 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙩 𝙢𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙫𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙨𝙝 𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙤𝙬. 𝙄𝙩 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙨 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙢𝙪𝙘𝙝 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨.’

Danika, an Alpha of her pack and Bryce’s best friend. Danika and her relationship with Bryce forms a huge part of the story. Their love transcends time and my heart kept breaking for her, Bryce and the Pack of Devils. The mystery of her character was fascinating and SJM did an amazing job at fleshing out a character behind the scenes.

Overall, this was a fantastic read and I plead you to not get intimidated by the worldbuilding. It all snaps into place towards the end so enjoy the journey. 🖤 ...more "
