Gogol also does not shy away from addressing some of the flaws of the Russian character typical of the middle class. He notes the superficial priorities, vapid lifestyles, and trashy conversations among social circles; though Gogol poses these shortcomings as merely ironic. For example, on page 205, Chapter 9, Gogol describes the dangerous gossip that poses the hero as an alleged pedophile. He writes as “This party, it must be said to the credit of the ladies, displayed incomparably more discipline and forethought. At once everything… was presented in clear, comprehensible forms, was explained and refined, so that one ended up with the definitive picture.” This "definitive picture," to note, is one of slander produced from pure ruminating gossip....more
