This compelling novel is mainly about friendship but also is about disability, physical pain, class, privilege, sexism and even the divisive nature of modern America. Gabrielle Zevin's imagination takes us on this moving and often turbulent journey which starts when Sam and Sadie meet as tweens in a hospital. Sadie’s sister is receiving treatment for cancer and Sam was in a traumatic car accident, which leaves him with a permanent disability. Sam is refusing to communicate and Sadie finds a way to reach Sam through video games. Both Sam and Sadie are gifted and strong-willed. Although Sadie manages to break though to Sam, their personalities lead them to have a falling out. The two do not meet again until they see each other at a train station in Cambridge as college students, Sadie is attending MIT and Sam is attending Harvard.

Once Sam and Sadie reunite as college students they are in many ways kindred spirits but pride, a certain lack in communication skills, and circumstances make their relationship tumultuous. A third character named Marx becomes very important to the both of them. In many ways, Marx, who has an easier way of moving through the world then Sam and Sadie do, helps to even out the anxieties and defensiveness of Sam and Sadie.

Sadie, Sam and Marx, start a video game company with each contributing their own talents. You do not have to play video games to enjoy this novel -- my idea of playing a video game is Wordle and I was engrossed in TTT. The video games become springboards for Zevin to tell many stories with the main story. Sam and Sadie use design and actual interactions with the video games to connect with each other and even to resolve their disputes.

Marx is almost always very likeable while Sam and Sadie are often unlikable. In fact, their behavior at times pushed me away sometimes almost to the point where I did not care what happened to them. But Zevin provides just enough background information to help us understand their flaws and reel us back in.

I read this book a few years ago and I loved it. When well done, I find stories within stories to be entertaining and fascinating way to convey multiple levels of meaning. You would think loving a book so much would cause me to write a review right away, but I delayed because I did not know if I could write something that did it justice!

Side note, I saw some reviewers say that this novel is “too woke.” Then there is another group of people who want to boycott the book because some strange nonsense about relating it to support for Israel. So, supposedly it is both too woke and not woke enough? I don’t really know why someone would think this book is too woke. There are characters who are not white. There is a video game having to do with gay marriage. At this point, most conservative politicians even support gay marriage or don’t talk about it and it is not a major theme of the book. In terms of Israel, Zevin is Jewish and apparently someone did research and found out she is a member or was a member of her synagogue’s Hadassah chapter. Hadassah is about the equivalent of the women’s auxiliary at a church. There is one character in the book who is a side character who is a professor and he is from Israel. The book was written in 2022 and his role has nothing to do with the IDF or politics. He is not even a protagonist in any way, shape or form. To ban a book for these types of reasons is in my opinion antisemitic.
