Rebecca Solnit
“the revolt against brutality begins with a revolt against the language that hides that brutality.”
Rebecca Solnit, The Encyclopedia of Trouble and Spaciousness

Elizabeth Gilbert
“Anyway, at some point in a woman’s life, she just gets tired of being ashamed all the time. After that, she is free to become whoever she truly is.”
Elizabeth Gilbert, City of Girls

Chanel Cleeton
“You speak as though politics is its own separate entity. As though it isn't in the air around us, as though every single part of us isn't politics. How can you dismiss something that is so fundamental to the integrity of who we are as a people, as a country? How can you dismiss something that directly affects the lives of so many?”
Chanel Cleeton, Next Year in Havana

Ken Follett
“Why was it, Lloyd wondered, that the people who wanted to destroy everything good about their country were the quickest to wave the national flag?”
Ken Follett, Winter of the World

Amor Towles
“But one night near the end, as I was sitting at his bedside trying to entertain him with an anecdote about some nincompoop with whom I worked, out of the blue he shared a reflection which seemed such a non sequitur that I attributed it to delirium. Whatever setbacks he has faced in his life, he said, however daunting or dispiriting the unfolding of events, he always knew that he would make it through as long as when he woke in the morning he was looking toward his first cup of coffee. Only decades later would I realize that he has been giving me a piece of advice.”
Amor Towles, Rules of Civility
