Well worth the time and effort. I really feel like I spent a month in another world, interacting with real people. That kind of immersion is nearly impossible to accomplish.

Someone ask me while I was reading this if I didn't feel smarter while reading Dickens. I did not -- in recent memory, only Infinite Jest has made me "feel smarter" -- but I do feel a great sense of accomplishment that this novel is complete. Glad I finally put in the time.

Future Matt -- do you remember everything that was going on while you read this? You finished it alone at midnight by a darkened Christmas tree, waiting for the dryer to do its thing to Harper's Rainbow Dash PJs so she was ready for a special day in first grade. The kitten was crated and the house was quiet except for the dryer whining. Earlier in the evening you had gone to the drive-through Christmas lights at Alum Creek State Park with the family; it was beautiful and you teared up when Vince Gulardi came on, like you do every year.

The world was gray when you started reading and it was gray when you woke up after finishing reading. There was disbelief, horror, and despondency about some major election. You spent a night at Claire and Tony's, the last one coherent when everyone else was asleep, and had a perfect moment where you wanted nothing -- nothing ever -- to change. Grammee came out from New York and made the Thanksgiving turkey for what you currently believe is the last time. You worried about money, dealt with depression, and occasionally felt hopeful about the future. You drank a lot of beer and a lot of mint tea. You should remember this month -- a lot changed, a lot ended, and, currently, you're not quite sure what's next, but there's this horizon with something just beyond it.
