Near the end, there is a sharp twist that makes the reader want to wonder what happens next. This book leaves readers gripping the edge of their seats. Producers should cast this book as a movie because the storyline is impressive. I read this book in only two days because it was so good. Neal Shusterman sure does know how to write a good story. The basic gist of the story is a world where there are no deaths. Man has conquered diseases, viruses, and all things that are harmful to humans. It is a world without fear except for scythes. Whenever someone sees them coming, they know death is coming. Scythes kill certain people to sustain population growth. The novel features two teenagers, Citra and Rowan. The first parts of the book, however were pretty slow and I thought of not reading this book and tossing it aside. But as I progressed forward, the book started to get bearable and soon fantastic. I understood the first parts of the book were there to help develop the storyline of the book and it made the story less confusing. I cannot wait for the sequel, Thunderhead I feel like the next book will be even better.
I rate this book four stars because some parts of the book were very unnecessary and slow, but overall the book was great. Some reviews said the book was very dull and moved at a snail-like pace. They hated the whole concept of the story and one person even described every little detail they did not like about the book. Examples are, how the empathetic scythes are complete hypocrites because it is not possible to be compassionate and fair when it comes to the deprivation of human life. Ok, first of all this is just a story and second of all it is not the scythe's choice to kill a human. In order to become a scythe you have to hate the idea of killing another human being. The scythes have to glean or kill people in order to sustain population growth. Another example is she explained the book as very obvious. She said " You might as well read the synopsis and mark the book as "read"" A synopsis is a brief summary of a book and Scythe has more to it than the short summary on the back of the book. There are so many details in the book about important ideas that help readers understand the book and she is saying to just read the summary and you basically know the whole story of the book. Yeah she is definitely wrong. In my opinion at least. ...more "
