Angie Thomas’s novel The Hate U Give is the story of a young girl facing controversial issues after a childhood friend gets killed by a police officer without reason. 16-year-old Starr Carter becomes an activist for her community against police brutality and learns to use her voice as her weapon to fight for what’s right.

Starr lives in two worlds. Garden Heights, the rundown black neighborhood where she lives, and Williamson, the rich white neighborhood where she goes to school. She lives at home with her stubborn, but influential dad Maverick, her loving mom, Lisa, and her two protective brothers Sekani and Seven. After the news gets out about Khalil’s unreasonable death, the balance between Starr’s two worlds is thrown off and she has to decide whether or not to come out as the witness and defend Khalil in court.

While I definitely recommend this book to readers, I would mainly recommend it to high schoolers and adults. Because this book contains a lot of hard issues concerning racial issues and discrimination, it could be hard for younger kids to read and thoroughly understand. Since the main characters are mostly teenagers, I think it would be a great book for high schoolers to read to see what issues are still going on in our world dealing with racism and get an idea of what they can do at their age to stand up and be involved in these kinds of issues.

Over the course of the book, Starr changes drastically due to Khalil’s death. She struggles throughout the book with her identity at Williamson because she doesn’t want people to see her garden heights side. She even lies about Khalil when her friends at school asked if she knew him. However, through her grief of Khalil, she learns to open up and be herself to stand up for him no matter what other people will think.

Starr’s narrative voice is very emotional and easy to relate to. She talks in a way where the reader can easily interpret every situation and every emotion that comes with it. She can make you cry, laugh, and yell in anger in the span of a chapter. Everything she talks about feels real because it is realistic fiction. Her story can relate with so many people dealing with the hate between racism and it can make you feel like you’re living in the book.

Starr’s reactions and opinions on the issues about discrimination and bi-racial relationships in the book are very insightful and relatable to many young adults. She talks about family financial issues, the difficulty of being the only black girl at her school, and the identity crisis of dating a white boy that makes her feel “less black” and isolated.

The Hate U Give is a great book for young adult readers. It faces all the hard issues fictionally that people don’t normally like to talk about in the real world. It portrays such a powerful message that spreading hate in the world only makes things worse and can influence so many young people. If you’re a young reader looking for a more sophisticated book with romance and hardships than I would highly recommend this book. ...more "

"I just finished this book and I would definitely recommend it. It talks about so many issues with diversity and police brutality. It really opens up your eyes to all the problems there still are with diversity. It has so many other great examples of family and being okay financially.
