Brief Description: Yellow star is about Syvia’s experience in the Lodz ghetto. With very little food and water along with deportations and dangerous Nazis, it is very hard to survive.

Characters: Don't cut me off…. Yay, I can talk! Anyway, I just wanted to say that I would-
Syvia Perlmutter is a girl of only around 5-6 years old! She is a very courageous and brave “mouse” as she calls herself. she likes to play with her doll and got along with two other kids in the ghetto. Syvia was a normal Jewish school girl, living life normally. But little did she know about Hitler and his ideology….
Dora Perlmutter is Syvia’s older sister, she is very nice and gives a lot to Syvia. Dora teaches Syvia the ABC’s and math because there is no school in a ghetto. Isaac is Syvia’s father, he is a man who is very smart and strong. Determination and persistence are seen in him throughout the book. He worked at a flour factory in the ghetto. Syvia’s mother is a caring and kind mom who worked at a factory that produced ladies underwear. Hava and Itka are Syvia’s best friends, they also have dolls and play with Syvia much often. And those are the main characters!

Problem/Conflict: Syvia and her family are taken to the Lodz ghetto in Poland after coming back from Warsaw. They must all survive and be very cautious as more and more people die as more and more are being moved into the ghetto.

Theme: The author believes that you should keep going, even if you lose somebody. Evidence 1: Isaac works the hardest just to feed Syvia and her family. He never gave up, he kept going even if the Nazis were a threat. 2: Syvia lost one of her friends while in the ghetto, but she got over it and never went suicidal and depression. In fact, Syvia and her friend made a joke about it! Well, they did not, their dolls did. 3: Syvia and 11 other children were supposed to be deported from the ghetto to a concentration camp, but they avoided death by sneaking into hiding places and hiding from the Nazis. They all lost someone whom they loved, most were parents. And yet, all of them continued to live.

Opinion/Analysis: I enjoyed this book because it was about WW2 (as always) and specifically about a rare occurrence, children surviving the wrath of Hitler. I enjoyed seeing a character being joyful and brave, it warmed my heart. My favorite part was the end when something finally happened. I was relieved and also shocked. The book did not leave me to think, I was simply relieved and surprised and also happy. This book had a nice ending, but not like a rock-solid one that concluded everything. This book was a WW2 book but the Jewish character in a ghetto was actually alive and well, instead of a sick person who struggles to survive. I would have extended the book to tell more about the years.

After all, it is a book in verse.
