Franzen's definitely a master wordsmith, but when I read his books, it seems he brings too much attention to his writing. It's a little too performative, and dense. It can take him 2 to 3 pages to describe a thought, or an action. I prefer writers that accomplish more with less, but I found myself much more engaged with the journey of the Hildebrandt family, grappling with their relationship with their church in a small town near Chicago, amidst the social upheaval of the early 1970's. His descriptive detail felt more adequate when describing the thoughts, feelings, and unpredictable actions of a family that is drifting apart from the center. Maybe I'll give the next book - the second of what is supposed to be a trilogy - 4 stars....more
