― Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility

April very much seems to be becoming a 'Jane Austen' audiobook month for me! During such a busy study season, it's much easier for me to take time to listen to an audiobook (whilst shopping, cooking, doing dishes) than it is to have a proper sit-down to read. I did very much enjoy this book, as I do with all Austen's works. But, I do think it is my least favourite of the ones I've read & re-read over these past weeks. I do not think it has the same substance as Pride and Prejudice or Persuasion. I very much like Elinor, and I cannot fault Marianne's naivety considering her young age. The story is definetly fun and has all the great heart-wrenching parts that Austen is so great at. There are some very good plot twists and exciting reveals too! However, I found that I wasn't so attached to the character's personalities, or their love stories as I was with the other two books. There are, of course, some great line and reflections, and I did find Colonel Brandon to be a lovely person, as well as Edward Ferrars. Elinor's sensibility and her general disposition felt familiar to me; I think Austen is very good at writing characters that readers can identify with. Elinor's internal suffering as she tries to support everyone is very well done, and something I think a lot of older sisters can relate to. Marianne is loveable in her own way; her progression from such strict and immoveable ideals of relationships, to her realisation of the realities of love and life is a thing that many a young woman (or person) can relate to. Having to come to terms with how the real-world works, and that not everyone is as good a person as you would hope is a painful realisation, but nonetheless important and true. The age-gap between Brandon and Marianne was not something I enjoyed, but considering the time period I does seem more acceptable. Overall, I did very much enjoy this book and am so glad I read it. BUT I do not think it stands up quite the same to Pride and Prejudice or Persuasion. See you soon for a review of Emma! - C x ...more "
