Colin is a teenage boy who has dated and been dumped by nineteen girls, all with the name of Katherine. After Katherine XIX ends their relationship, he vows to get her back. He embarks on a road trip with his best friend, Hassan, to figure out a mathematical formula he can use to predict relationships. He is hoping that it can provide him with insight in order to win Katherine XIX back. He spends an extraordinary amount of time completing complicated math work including graphing, functions, and theorems, yet he is unable to accurately plot the nature and course of relationships.
His adventure leads him to the town of Gutshot, Tennessee, where he meets a girl, named Lindsay, who helps him with his project. While they are unsuccessful at formulating the mathematical equation necessary to predict relationships, they ultimately fall in love, breaking Colin's Katherine streak. However, this plot was too predictable. Obviously, relationships cannot be plotted and figured out as they are too many contributing factors. Each person is unique and therefore human relationships bring too many variables to simplify them into a graph. However, the book would have been more interesting and useful to reader's lives if Colin and Lindsay listed compatibility factors or other scientific data that would predict the likelihood of whether relationships would work out. This kind of information would allow readers to apply the knowledge gained from the book to analyze relationships of those they know to see whether they fit into the pattern created by Colin and Lindsay. In addition, since throughout the entirety of the novel, Colin claims his affinity for Katherine XIX and obsesses over her, it would be more meaningful had his theorem worked and been useful to their reunification. Otherwise, this book was too calculable which is ironic given that Colin's mathematics calculations failed. This alternative ending would have made the book more valuable and exciting to read. ...more "
