The Power of Six, the second book in the I am Number Four series, makes even the most skeptical people believe that there is alien life out there. In a very creative book, a group of authors under the surname Pittacus Lore come up with a rather far-fetched but highly entertaining novel. To be teleported a few years into the future, simply sit in your favorite chair, put a cat on your lap and read.
The Power of Six starts off from the last book’s end; John Smith, also known as Number Four, is rescued by Number Six from another alien race, the Mogadorians. However, Four is no ordinary teenager. He is an alien - one of the last Loric aliens with superhuman powers, called Legacies, making them extremely strong. Six is also Loric. At the same time, these aliens are being hunted by the Mogadorians (also called Mogs), another alien race that is vicious and atrocious. The Mogadorians are trying to completely wipe out the Loric race, but are still hunting a few teenagers. These teens are labeled by numbers, and there are only a few of them left. This is why John is Number Four.
After the rescue conducted by Six, John (also called Four) and Six then embarked on a wild journey, trying to find and reconnect with the other Loric. They are assisted by John’s best friend, a virtuous human named Sam. They constantly have to escape government officials, who fear their incredible abilities and watch out for Mogadorians. The trio have to evade Mogadorians and the government as well as find the rest of their Loric race. It is a precarious scenario.
The book also takes the point of view of a girl named Marina. Marina, as is later revealed, is the Loric Number Seven. She lives in almost an Annie-themed scenario. She lives in an orphanage in Spain where grumpy nuns reprimand her daily and deter her from living her life. However, she learns from a news network that some Loric, John and Number Six, are on the move. She then gains hope, thinking that she might finally be able to escape the orphanage and meet her fellow aliens.
John (Four), Six, and Sam also discover Marina’s location. They decide that they need to find Seven (Marina) as quickly as possible, in case she is in danger. At the same time, however, they discover the location of a secret Mogadorian base. It seemed as if John and Sam could slip into it unnoticed.
They still needed to regroup with their race, so John and Sam journeyed off to the base while Six went after Marina. However, troubles arises and John and Sam met issues entering the base, while Six is meet by an army of Mogadorians. Both John and Sam and Six and Marina find help from a very unexpected arrival. Who is this newcomer? While they all make it out alive, or will there be casualties? Will the Loric reunite altogether? Read The Power of Six to find out!
The book is an adventure, and a fun rollercoaster of excitement. I loved the book, despite never truly believing in aliens. This book is certain to excite, and a lovable book.
The book also discusses the theme of bravery. Bravery is certainly a good lesson to learn. For example, in the book, Sam rushes headfirst into a Mogadorian base, despite only being a human with athletic ineptitude. John also leaves his old life of hiding and launches himself into a hurricane to stop his nemesis, the Mogs, from hurting his friends.
The Power of Six is an amazing book, and I’d give it ten stars. ...more "
