" The book starts off with a group of friends hanging out after an incident occurs. This leaves Mark, the protagonist on edge. In the book, the incident is referred to as “it”, but the author doesn’t directly tell us what “it” is yet. However, I think The book starts off with a group of friends hanging out after an incident occurs. This leaves Mark, the protagonist on edge. In the book, the incident is referred to as “it”, but the author doesn’t directly tell us what “it” is yet. However, I think it’s possible that “it” refers to a break-in to their house since the protagonist mentions how he and his wife, Steph, had installed a motion-activated camera outside. Mark also wakes up in the middle of the night thinking he had heard noises outside their bedroom wall. After this, he has a hard time falling back asleep. In the book, another character, Damon, tries to make Mark and Steph feel better by saying “This sort of [thing] happens to so many people here. It’s just wrong.” He mentions that a couple of times. That makes me think that the characters in the book live in a dangerous neighborhood. Additionally, when Carla, Mark’s friend and Damon’s girlfriend suggests that Mark and his wife go somewhere out of the country to get their mind off things and relieve their stress, Mark replies saying that they don’t have enough money to go on vacation. He also throws in that they don’t even have enough money to get Steph’s car repaired. However, if Mark and Steph don’t have a lot of money, why would someone want to break into their house? It makes me think that Mark and Steph might’ve been robbed and that they used to have money. Furthermore, on the first page, it says “ Trying to ignore the clot of history under the bottom shelf of the narrow pantry, I grab another bag of chips and reverse out into the kitchen again.” What does the protagonist mean by “clot of history?” What could’ve happened under the bottom shelf of the pantry that was so bad that Mark didn’t want to be in there? Even though I’ve only read a few chapters of this book so far, I already have so many questions, making me want to read on and get answers. I would not recommend this book to everyone but I would definitely recommend this book to someone who is interested in books with a lot of mystery and suspense. ...more "
