Unfortunately, those moments have been overshadowed by how unnecessarily difficult the book often makes its own subject matter.

Greek mythology is inherently complicated. It contains enormous genealogies, recurring names, different local traditions, contradictory versions of the same myths, and countless gods, heroes, kings and geographical locations. That is precisely why a book attempting to compile these stories needs exceptionally clear organization and narrative structure. Instead, the author too often seems to forget that the reader may not already possess the same encyclopedic knowledge of the material that she does.

A story will begin with one character or dynasty, only to be interrupted by the introduction of several relatives, their marriages, their children, an alternative genealogy from another ancient source, a geographical aside, and sometimes an entirely separate myth. By the time the original narrative resumes, I frequently find myself wondering what I was supposed to be reading about in the first place. Important information and supplementary information are presented with almost equal weight, leaving the reader to determine what is essential and what is merely an interesting variation or digression.

What frustrates me most is that this could have been solved through better structure rather than by removing the wealth of information. Tell the principal myth clearly from beginning to end. Then use subsections, notes or clearly marked digressions to discuss alternative versions, conflicting ancient sources and related myths. Instead, these are repeatedly inserted directly into the narrative, breaking its momentum and making already complicated genealogies considerably harder to follow.

I enjoy reading mythology because I want the pleasure of gradually discovering these stories and seeing how their characters and traditions connect. Too often, reading this book feels less like discovery and more like an exercise in deciphering the author’s organization. I have repeatedly had to consult outside sources simply to reconstruct the basic sequence of events or work out which characters I actually need to remember. A reference book can certainly encourage further research, but I should not need a second source beside me simply to understand the narrative that the first book is supposedly explaining.

This is particularly disappointing because, when the author does stay with a coherent group of characters and allows a myth to unfold from beginning to end, the book can be genuinely fascinating. Those chapters demonstrate exactly how enjoyable this collection could have been with stronger editorial discipline throughout.

The scholarship and breadth of knowledge behind the book are obvious, and readers already deeply familiar with Greek mythology may appreciate the density of names, variants and cross-references. But comprehensiveness is not the same thing as clarity. For a reader trying to build a structured understanding of Greek mythology, the presentation can be exhausting and, at times, genuinely infuriating.

I am only halfway through and intend to finish it, so my opinion may still change. At this point, however, the book has too often managed to take a subject I find fascinating and make the act of reading about it feel like work. And for me, that is its greatest failure. ...more "
