A few months ago, I randomly stumbled upon this quote and it caught me in a grip. I, a thirsty for angst, yearning and over-the-top dramatics gal who hasn’t read Wuthering Heights yet, checked where the quote was from, saw the red bird cover, barely skimmed through the blurb and concluded: I think I’m going to fucking adore this.

And I absolutely did.

I feel like I’ve been waiting for this book for years – but it came to me in the right time when I was in the perfect mood.

Needless to say, Marya and Koschey’s relationship quenched my thirst for sick, dysfunctional, angry, toxic drama and I drank it til the last drop. What confused me was that in a bunch of reviews readers complained about the relationship being an obsession and fight for power rather than love, and I thought, wait, you didn’t go into the book for the toxicity? Isn’t that the point?

To my surprise, there was also so much more to this book – and in so few pages. The story overflows with Slavic mythological creatures, lush descriptions and a historical backdrop – and while for some it might seem to be too much, I absolutely reveled in it and it kept me always occupied and entertained in spite of the somewhat lacking plot. In fact, Koschei was absent throughout about half of the book (which additionally helped me fully savour the dramatics while it lasted), while the other half focused on Marya's other relationships and explored trauma and the impact of war.

I tend to be picky when it comes to the author’s writing style – I like them either simple but not minimal, or rich but not too elaborate. Catherynne Valente’s writing is more on the elaborate end, but it immediately cast a spell on me. I’ve lost count of the quotes that I have underlined – and the one that got me hooked in the first place is not even in my top five.

And, lastly, at the point when I felt like I was already drunk on heartbreaking exchanges and haunting imagery, Valente took the story and lifted it on a different level where it transformed into an even weirder but just as melancholic fever dream. Absolute insanity.

To be honest, I expected this to be a darker Cruel Beauty, but it exceeded my expectations in every aspect. I still see some similarities though (view spoiler).

TL;DR: I wouldn't say this is a book everyone should read, but it is right up my alley. It became an instant favourite and I'll be thinking about it for a long time. ...more "
