I marked this excerpt while I was reading since it seemed to hit major issues. Shirin, a hajab wearing Persian teen living immediately in a post 9/11 world, navigates bigots and racists, coming to terms with her identity, all while falling in love with Ocean, the cliched star basketball player. Touching on such sensitive subjects like Arabic speaking immigrants in America, interracial relationships, and identity, I enjoyed reading Shirin’s perspective.

There are remarkable things all the time, right in front of us, but our eyes have like the clouds over the sun and our lives are paler and poorer if we do not see them for what they are.
