A book review of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a thrilling dystopian book about what happens to North America after a civil war. The Hunger Games is in North America which is called Panem, there are twelve districts and a capital, and each district has a specialty which powers the capital, such as fish, district 4, or coal, district 12. Every year, they send a boy and a girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen from each district into an arena to fight to the death on live television, until there is one left. While The Hunger Games was a thrilling and intriguing book, it could have been written with different perspectives.

In The Hunger Games, a sixteen-year-old girl named Katniss Everdeen lives in District 12, one of the poorer districts, and illegally hunts to provide for her family; her mother and sister. At the Reaping, where they publicly choose children for the Hunger Games, Katniss’ sister, Prim, is chosen to go into the Hunger Games. Katniss volunteers in her place to save her sister's life. The boy chosen for the games is Peeta Mellark. Peeta and Katniss have a small history; Peeta saved Katniss’ life when she was younger by purposely burning bread and giving it to her for her family. In the Hunger Games, they must pretend they are in love to stay alive. However, what Katniss doesn’t know is that Peeta isn’t faking.

This book showed people what the world could be; it shows that the world will always have the love and sacrifice. Collins, showed what could happen in the future if the world were to go downhill from now, but still having love in the air. The Hunger Games captured how important a family is to the well being of a person and affects how a person responds because if Katniss did not have her family she never would have gone into the game or fallen in love with Peeta.
The Hunger Games shows, from Katniss’ perspective, what she had to do to keep her life. This book gives us two results of what happened, Katniss’ motivation to come back for her family and what she must do to achieve her goal. The book is unique and captures a dystopian world where the protagonist is not different from the society (which is common in most other dystopian books) but is in some ways the same as them all. This brings a new perspective than other books where the protagonist feels out of place. The Hunger Games brings love and sacrifice to a book where there is no true war, but one with the characters’ selves.

This was a well-written book, but the main problem with this book was the perspectives. Collins wrote from the perspective of Katniss, whereas the book could have benefited from being spoken from Peeta’s perspective. Another aspect that could be added was what was happening to Katniss’ family while she was in the games.

Overall, Collins wrote a pleasing and intriguing book. The Hunger Games would be fit for middle and high school students because if this book were the reality, these would be the children the games would affect. Collins wrote a completely engrossing and thrilling story and kept the readers involved, even though there were a few perspective issues.
