He cut off all ties with his family and hitchhiked all the way to Alaska, and hiked off into the dense wilderness alone, with no prior survival experience. The author, Jon Krakauer, shows how McCandless inspired and influenced everyone that he met on his journey. McCandless was tired of living in a society where all we do is take, he wanted to live a much more simplistic life by himself, even if it cost him his life. Four months after his journey began, his decomposed and rotten remains were found by a couple and a few hunters.
I really enjoyed this book, it reaccounts McCandless' struggle and it shows why he wanted to do this, and why he would risk it all just to do some soul searching. The author does a good job of depicting how many lives were touched by McCandless and how he inspired people because of his fool-hardiness and cunning personality. I still think that this is an extremely rash and suicidal journey, because he was alone with nothing but a .22 and his clothes. He had no idea of how to survive, especially in such harsh conditions. Chris is brave to put it all on the line but I still think that this is a stupid thing to do.
I dont think that the author did a good job organizing this book, it jumps around between different people far too many times and it makes it hard to follow at times. The author makes this book feel like I'm reading a more in depth magazine article that is trying to depict the same story. Krakauer made this book feel like it was an interview for a magazine or a newspaper, he would often switch characters in the middle of a chapter. He does this a lot in his other book "Into Thin Air" as well. It makes it hard to follow whats going on and I often found myself reading and not understanding what anyone was talking about.
In my opinion I would not recommend this book, I liked Chris McCandless' story, but I didn't like the way that author decided to lay it out. Overall it was an okay book but its was very hard to follow and understand what was going on. ...more "
