From the anecdotes characters would tell to the suspense of the classroom holdup and the ending it leads up to. Although I find that one thing it was lacking in surprisingly was character building. They did cover a wide array of charlie's classmates but i noticed that it constantly went back to certain characters such as Carol, Ted and Sylvia and there were others I felt could have used more time in the spotlight. And the pacing does start to slow down midway through the book but picks back up after a couple pages so it wasn't too much of a problem but the major drop in suspense really killed some sections of the book. But one thing I had noticed that worked well for the book was the amount of suspense that is constantly building throughout the entirety of the book. The second Charlie takes control of the classroom is when the book really picks up, you have no clue what could happen as they sit there with a class full of complete strangers soon to be dove into as secrets and stories are being told back and forth some students sit silently in anger as others partake in the festivities and try to make the most of their time in the classroom while piles of patrol cars sit in wait for a moment to strike at Charlie. There was a question I feel this book had answered even though it was not one that had been asked and that was, why do we as human beings seek to achieve a utopian society. The way it is portrayed in the book Charlie is holed up in a classroom with his fellow classmates as hostages but throughout the book he is constantly fighting for control of both the situation inside of the room and outside as he has conversations over the speaker with the schools psychologist. It is abundantly clear that as the book goes on he slowly loses control of both situations as the students get increasingly more mad at each other for the secrets that have been told and the police force gets more impatient at the same time. It seems to me that Charlie is attempting to make his own utopian society simply because he is in the midst of a power struggle as if he were a dictator and the students are revolting in a way unknown to them while Charlie is trying to get the whole situation just the way he wants it. Personally I enjoyed the entirety of this wonderful novel and would greatly recommend it to friends and family who are familiar with some of stephen king's other works, it is a nice short novel that is completely gripping all the way through. As I had said before if the book had taken more of a the students in the classroom I felt it could have been more enjoyable although with the stuff that it does do well it is still a great book that I would definitely recommend to a reader of stephen kings books....more
